We all love drag races and while the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and Shelby F-150 Super Snake are anything but competitors, seeing them race is hugely entertaining.
As Throttle House recently discovered in its first review of the F-150 Super Snake, this is a vehicle that makes no sense. Indeed, no rational person would ever consider buying one, but that is part of its appeal: it is completely unnecessary but also immeasurably cool.
Driving the powerful pickup truck is a 5.0-liter V8 engine that has been outfitted with a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger and a host of modifications that allow it to deliver an outstanding 770 hp. Shelby says it is good for a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.45 seconds, a very impressive figure for a vehicle of this size.
By comparison, the Corvette Stingray uses a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 rated at 495 hp. However, it makes up for the power deficit by being considerably lighter than the Shelby, utilizing a more advanced eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and being far more aerodynamic. As such, despite the ‘Vette’s huge power deficit over the Shelby F-150, the outcome of the two races, from a standing and a rolling start, is not a forgone conclusion.
